How to make the best decisions.

Hint: you are likely basing them on the wrong things!

Are you aware of how you decide things?

It is important to understand that the manner in which you make each decision, how you go about living your life, reflects your past. You base your decisions on who you were, on what experiences you have had, and what worked for you before.

That is being human. We all behave this way. We go through life trying to figure things out, repeating what works and dropping what doesn’t. Which can be a great approach and definitely provides the illusion of safety.

But — that is only an illusion. We forget that the world is constantly changing around us. So if we are staying static, doing things the way we have always done them, basing decisions on what has worked for us in the past, we might really limit ourselves.

Behaving in one way got you to where you are today. But it might not get you to where you want to go tomorrow.

Instead, we need to imagine possibilities, to dream. We need to get in touch with that little voice inside of us, with our feelings, with our desires. And we then need to lean into those possibilities, as scary as they may be.

Because embracing those possibilities will almost certainly feel scary. But consider the idea that it might not actually be fear that you are feeling, but nervous excitement?

That may sound crazy, but think about it. The bodily sensations are very similar between fear and excitement; sweaty palms, knots in your stomach, a tingling sensation in your body. Chances are that when you were a kid, these sensations were a sign of excitement. You were about to undertake something novel, something exhilarating, something thrilling. Somewhere along the line, as we mature into adulthood, we learned to associate those bodily sensations with fear rather than with excitement. Then we avoid those things. And that is incredibly unfortunate. Really, who wants to have excitement taken out of life?

Rather than basing your decisions on avoiding what scares you or on what you have always done in the past, try to make each decision based on how well it lines up with the vision that you have for your life.

Because that is the path forward to a glorious life; deciding what you want your life to be and then taking actions every day that bring you closer to that vision.
